Malawi’s locally produced kung fu short film has attracted rare and exciting reviews beyond the country’s borders and just days after being uploaded on social media the movie titled The Town Monger has gotten itself over three million viewers on YouTube.

Out of the 43.40 minutes long movie done in a local Chichewa language, the producers just uploaded a single 2.22 minutes scene which as of Monday September 12 had attracted 3 347 354 viewers on YouTube with thousands of shares on different social media platforms, including Facebook and Twitter.

The 2:22 minutes scene has also received numerous rare and interesting reviews from across the borders from viewers from countries such as Kenya, Botswana and as far as Nigeria a country which has set itself apart on the continent’s movie industry through its Nollywood productions.

One Kenyan website www.ghafla.com carries a screaming headline ˜Malawian kung-fu movie restores the glory of African action films that was ripped apart by Nollywood”. The website boasted that not all was lost in the African movie industry.

“At least Malawi is doing justice with action movies especially karate/Kung Fu movies on the African arena,” reads the story.

The website says apart from issues with sound, the scenes in the Malawian kung fu movie are like what is seen in Jackie Chan action packed films.

Another review on www.criticalhit.net says the display of martial arts prowess in The Town Monger was just on another level, a clear demonstration that African action movies can go places if African movie producers get serious.

Nigerian website www.bellanaija.com wrote that the Malawian film is well choreographed with the kicks and punches coming out naturally.

Botswana Online magazine also gave an exciting review the Malawian film via its Facebook pagewww.facebook.com/bwonlinemag/.

“Who said Africans cannot do kung fu? Watch a Malawian kung fu scene ladies and gentlemen, tag your friends, they need to see this,” writes the Botswana Online whose Facebook page also uploaded the video clip which went viral and attracted thousands of positive comments from across the globe.

One viewer identified as Kaydy West said: “I have been following their films. Very good. But what I can recommend is for them to either translate or act in English to gain more audience.”

Film Association of Malawi (Fama) president Ezaius Mkandawire and proprietor of M-Theatres cinema Sunduzwayo Jere have also commented on the short movie.

“This is the way to go. As M-Theatres, we are ready to work with such promising talents to give them a platform to showcase them at M-Theatres,” said Jere.

In an interview, editor of the trending local film Saidi Rashiz Chapeyama expressed gratitude on the overwhelming response the film is receiving on both local and international level.

The Malawian kung fu movie has been produced by Kufewa Acrobatics from Ndirande Township in Blantyre under the Ndirawood Films and stars members of the Kufewa Acrobatics.

“We were not expecting that the film could cause such an astounding buzz. We are motivated to promote it and do better in our next productions,” said Chapeyama.

Chapeyama is not new in arts and film production. He is the one who designed and programmed the social and youth online magazine called Watsupmalawi (www.watsupmalawi.com ). He was also behind the formation of the music group Likoma Island, a hip hop outfit behind the hit song Phwando La Dzulo. Chapeyama also co-directed Annie Matumbi’s hit song Amayimusic video, among other projects.

Recently, Malawi has seen a number of locally produced films being nominated at different continental and global awards with some of them going all the way to emerge winners.
