A 16-YEAR-OLD girl of Matero township has testified in the Lusaka High Court that her aunt told her she had made her three children drink a pesticide.
This is in a case where Mirriam Mulenga of Matero is charged with the murder of her two children after she allegedly made them drink Doom.
Testifying before High Court judge-in-charge Gertrude Chawatama, the girl, who is a niece to the accused, said on the material day around 18:00 hours, she was in the kitchen when Mulenga took the children with her to the bedroom.
She said while in the kitchen, she heard two of the children calling her for help. The witness said when she went to the bedroom, she found all the three children, as well as Mulenga, crying.
“I asked why they were crying and my aunty (Mirriam) told me that she gave the children Doom to drink and that she [had] also drank some,” the girl said.
She said Mulenga then asked her to call her friend Sabrina who was not at her place. The girl said she proceeded to inform Sabrina’s sister who thought she was joking. She said when she returned to the bedroom, she saw a small bottle of Doom. She said she got one of her affected siblings whom she took to a shop to drink milk but it was coming out from the nose. She said the owner of the shop later advised her to stop since the milk was coming out through the nose. She said the children’s father came and took all of them to Chingwere Clinic where two of the victims – Darson and Mwiche – died. And the girl’s brother testified that when he heard about what Mulenga had done, he rushed home and found one of the children lying down in the kitchen and looking weak.
He said Mulenga and the other two children were also on the floor and weak. The boy said he later went to call his uncle who immediately rushed all of them to the clinic.
The case has been adjourned to September 27 for continuation of trial.
