ONE person has died while two others have sustained serious injuries in an accident involving a goods train and a Scania truck.

The accident happened around 02:00hrs at rail crossing near Kapiri Glass Products (KGP) along the Ndola road when the truck driver failed to obey rail traffic signals at a level crossing and in the process went to hit into the Goods Train which had the right of way.

Acting Police Spokesperson Danny Mwale has confirmed the accident to Mwebantu in a statement.

Mwale has identified the operator of the goods train as Mulenga Fredrick aged 32 years of house number NMB 888 Chipulukusu in Ndola who was operating a Goods Train Number 0522 on Locomotive number 01/611 while the driver of the Scania truck registration number AIB 1608 who had two male passengers on board is still unknown.

Mwale said one passenger from the motor vehicle died on the spot as a result of fatal injuries while two passengers sustained serious injuries and are currently admitted to kapiri mposhi district hospital.

He said the Locomotive operator escaped unhurt while the truck was extensively damaged, and the goods train had its front part damaged.

Mwale has since advised road users especially those in Kapiri Mposhi to exercise patience as the road is completely blocked due to the accident.

Meanwhile Mwale said police officers working together with Zambia Railways officials are doing everything possible to quickly address the situation.
