Choma – The Choma Fast Truck Court has committed a 17 year old juvenile of Zambia Compound to Katombora Reformatory School after he was found guilty of having unlawful canal knowledge of a 13 year old imbecile.
Particulars of the offence are that on October 31st, 2019, in Zambia Compound of Choma district, the juvenile had unlawful canal knowledge of an imbecile contrary to the laws of Zambia.
Probation officer from the department of Social Welfare Elizabeth Nshimbi submitted in her report that being a first offender the juvenile should be given probation.
Ms Nshimbi explained that in the African culture it is considered a taboo for parents to talk to their children about sex education and in turn the children gather such information from their peers which is scanty and may in some cases lead them to experiment.
In mitigation the juvenile asked the court for forgiveness and his father claimed he is the only surviving child and all his siblings are dead hence the court should exercise maximum leniency.
However, Resident Magistrate Ethel Phiri observed that the offence committed is very serious and if he was an adult he could have been jailed for 15 years.
Magistrate Phiri noted that the juvenile needs help hence the need for him to go to reformatory school.
After the sentencing the juvenile broke down in uncontrollable sobbing and had to be escorted out of the court room by the security manning the detainees.
