The Veterinary department in Mazabuka has disclosed that all the animals that were seized last week from 34 livestock farmers of Dundumwezi and Macha were auctioned off despite efforts to disrupt the sale by angry owners.
Mazabuka District Veterinary Officer Dr. Ernest Ndalama told Choma-based Byta FM News that the owners of the animals only showed anger by disrupting the auction sale on Friday but they did not take away the livestock.
Dr. Ndalama said the court continued with the auction sale on Saturday afternoon and everything was sold out.
He stated that with the help of the police and other government security wings, whatever was seized was protected and they ensured that the auctioning process was completed.
Dr. Ndalama said the consignment comprised of 85 pigs, 280 chicken and 130 goats all together adding up to 495 animals from the two trucks.
He explained that out of 85 pigs confiscated, 48 died, 130 chickens also died while three goats died due to starvation before being auctioned.
An effort by Byta FM to get a comprehensive report from the Mazabuka Magistrate Court failed as the report was not ready by press time.
