About 10,000 houses will be constructed once the modern sugar plant an American company is setting up in Western Province starts operating.

Programme Against Discrimination in Communities (PADIC) executive director Sitali Sitali says the company and an American firm, The Rosenthall Group (TRG), last week signed a €150,000,000 agreement for the latter to set up a modern sugar-processing plant in Limulunga district.

The total cost of the entire project is estimated at US13 billion.

Mr Sitali said the company intends to construct the houses as a way of transforming the rural community of Limulunga and surrounding towns.

He said the company further plans to construct a university in Kalabo district to contribute to the education sector.

Mr Sitali said the sugar factory, once completed, is expected to generate US$120 million annually in the first five years of production.

The launch of the plantation has been set for next week, while the ground breaking will be done in July this year.
