Chipata Central Constituency losing candidate in the August 12 general election Amon Jere through his lawyer Joseph Chirwa has applied that the election petition he filed in the High Court be withdrawn in its entirety.

This is in line with section 103 of the electoral process Act.

Judge Mwenda Zimba, who is sitting in the Chipata High Court has ordered that all the procedures of withdrawing the petition case be followed.

She said this include filling in a notice of withdrawal to the respondents, the court and that it has to be published in the newspaper.

Judge Zimba has adjourned the matter to October 4th 2021 as a date for hearing of the notice.

And speaking to journalists shortly after the court session, the petitioner Amon Jere said he believes that elections shouldn’t be decided in court but by the voters.

Mr. Jere said he doesn’t want to deprive the people of Chipata Central representation through a court process that will take a long time.

And first respondent, Chipata Central Member of Parliament Ruben Mtolo Phiri who is being represented by Counsel Gilbert Phiri said he is delighted with the decision made by the petitioner.

Mr. Phiri, who is also agriculture minister said the matter was a disturbance to him as he is supposed to be looking at the national issues such as maize purchasing and farm input distribution.
