Police in Lusaka have formally charged United Prosperous and Peaceful Zambia UPPZ president Charles Chanda with 40 counts of obtaining money by false pretence out of the 160 counts reported.
And Police Spokesperson Esther Mwaata Katongo says Mr Chanda may remain in custody even after being in detention more than 48 hours because he was nowhere to be seen at the time police were looking for him.
Mrs Katongo says Mr Chanda was yesterday charged with 40 counts of obtaining money by false pretence but still has over 100 pending charges as new complaints continued to emerge against him.
She says arresting officers will, however, decide whether to release Mr Chanda together with his daughter on police bond or may keep him in detention until all charges are read out to him.
Mr Chanda and his daughter Esther Chanda was arrested on Monday by armed police officers after appearing at the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court after taking plea on 20 out of the 122 charges.
But Mr Chanda maintains that he is a genuine businessman who has been a target of a smear campaign by enemies.
