President Trump warns president Edgar Lungu and PF to respect human rights and threatens to cut aid to Zambia.

The United States government is gravely concerned by credible reports of numerous detentions, beatings, and other abuses of Zimbabweans over the past week, particularly targeting opposition activists. There should be no role for violence, intimidation, or harassment in the new Zimbabwe.

We are also deeply concerned that Zambia chose to hand over former Minister of Finance Tendai Biti to the Zimbabwean authorities, and in the face of a reported Zambian court order blocking his expulsion from Zambia.
This decision is particularly disheartening given the courage that Zambia showed in sheltering thousands of Zimbabwean freedom fighters from Rhodesian aggression in the days of Zimbabwe’s independence struggle. We will be discussing this matter with Zambia’s leaders and reviewing certain aspects of our cooperation with the Zambian government.

The Government of Zimbabwe is now responsible for Tendai Biti’s safety and welfare. We call on Zimbabwe’s leaders to guarantee Mr. Biti’s physical safety and ensure his constitutional and human rights are respected, consistent with the rule of law and Zimbabwe’s international obligations and commitments. In Washington, the United States has convoked the ambassadors of both Zimbabwe and Zambia to register our gravest concerns.

While Zimbabwe had a historic opportunity to move the country toward a brighter future for all its citizens, an electoral process marred by violence that does not respect constitutional rights and procedures is not a step toward that future.

  1. The US ambassador to Zambia should be dismissed for being idle on duty. I do not know how many times the international community has been informed about the poor human record of the Zambian Government. A poor human rights record is a poor human rights record. A country like the US should be in a position to see it even before one of their pawns is mistreated.

  2. The Zambian Government behaved shamefully badly over the Biti Deportation issue. In the minimum they should have extended to him some courtesy and respect befitting his political status. How quickly the PF have forgotten the way their founder Sata as an opposition leader was treated in Malawi and how it affected relations between Zambia and Malawi when Sata became President. Today in opposition ,tomorrow in power !I am sure Tendai Biti will forever treasure the treatment the PF have extended to him.

  3. If you follow whats happening in America, Donald Trump has no respect for human rights. He should be the last person admonishing Zambia. This big brother kind of disrespect towards other countries is sickening and should be called out for what it is. Donald Trump is worse than many African dictators today.

  4. Trump is chasing and deporting Mexicans in their thousands from America. What right does America have to tell us who should come into our country if they are even building a wall to prevent not one but hundreds of thousands of mexicans from entering their America.
Zambia is not a colony of America.
