Former commerce minister Bob Sichinga says it is his prayer that he and many other opposition members of parliament of integrity will be elected in order to impeach President Edgar Lungu, should he be “illegally elected”.
Speaking with Daily Revelation, Sichinga said President Lungu was committing an illegality by seeking another term of office, given that he had already twice held office. He said it did not matter what any authority would prescribe, but parliament would have to rectify the matter.
“It is my prayer that I be elected along with other people of integrity who are going to question this…the combined efforts of the opposition if he’s elected to make sure that he’s impeached, no two ways. But you will have to have the numbers,” Sichinga said, who is contesting as an independent in Mafinga constituency, formerly Isoka-East.
Sichinga said he envied the courts like those in Malawi and Kenya who he said had the backbone to rule against a sitting head of state, saying they were courts of integrity.
“Not these hired guns,” he said.
Sichinga said before the matter even gets to parliament, the Zambian people must declare their verdict over President Lungu and his going for “a third term.”
“Whether he’s elected or not it will be illegal for him to stand,” said Sichinga.
