Innocent Kalimanshi

INNOCENT Kalimanshi last night endured the low night temperature of Lusaka in Kamwala Remand Prison after he failed to satisfy bail conditions by close of business yesterday.

Kalimanshi who according to court records is a 40-year-old businessman of House number 50 Salaama Park in Lusaka appeared in the Lusaka Magistrates Court yesterday after spending a week in police detention.

He has been charged with assault and criminal trespass with intent to annoy.

Co-charged with him are three other members of his Embenezer-singing ensemble namely; Donald Kampamba, James Sakala 43 and Samuel Kabalambwe 42.

The charges stem from last Saturday’s violent scenes at Patriot Secretaiat where Kalimanshi was not only savagely beaten but also had his K700,000 Ford Ranger extensively damaged.

Allegations in the first count are that Kalimanshi, Kampamba, Sakala and Kabalambwe on May 1,2021 whilst acting together entered the premises of the Patriotic Front secretariat with intent to annoy.

In the second and third counts Kalimanshi is on the same date alleged to have assaulted Theresa Sampa and Hellen Mwansa and occasioned them actual bodily harm.

Kalimanshi and his co-accuaed pleaded not guilty to the charges before magistrate Felix Kaoma.

The four were then granted K10,000 cash bail on a condition that they provide two working sureties from reputable organizations bound on a similar sum to be paid in their own recognizance.

But as the day came to close yesterday, the financial muscle of four seemed not match their physical muscles as they failed to meet meet the bail conditions.

This entails that Kalimanshi together along with outspoken EEP president Chilufya Tayali will spend their weekends on the cold concrete of police accommodation until latest Monday when the courts reopen for business.
