POLICE in Katete have arrested a 16-year-old boy for allegedly killing his father following a quarrel over a mobile phone battery.
Eastern Province police commissioner Lackson Sakala said the juvenile of Kafumbwe village in chief Kawaza area was arrested for killing his father Sipilyano Phiri, 49 after he hit him on the head with a stone on October 2.
Sakala said the father and son differed over a mobile phone battery.
He said Phiri was rushed to St Francis Mission Hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Sakala said Phiri’s body was by Thursday in the hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
He said the juvenile was apprehended by villagers who handed him over to police.
Sakala said the teenager has been charged with murder and will appear in court soon.
And headman Kalinde of the same area said Phiri’s son had a record of stealing things from people.
“On this day he stole a battery from his friend and his father was not pleased. So his father picked up a whip and started chasing him. But his father didn’t know that the boy had picked stone. The boy hit his father with a stone in the head and he fell down,” recounted headman Kalinde.
“So the people who were there [took] this man to Kafumbwe clinic before rushing him to St Francis where he was pronounced dead.”
