Luanshya Municipal Council has approved a resolution to honor some outstanding personalities that have brought glory to the area. A special full council meeting presided over by Luanshya Mayor Nathan Chanda proposed that eminent sports personalities who are alive and those that have passed on should be recognized and honored.

The council agreed that they will give the personalities free residential plots. The proposed names include the late FIFA referee Leah Nakonda, footballers Dickson Makwaza, Joel Bwalya, and John Lungu among several others.

Other nominees include former Roan United stars Happy Simfukwe, Happy Malama, Ginger Pensulo, Dan Kabwe, and Collins Mbesuma.

Football Association of Zambia has welcomed the idea. FAZ President Andrew Kamanga has also suggested that a match be held as part of the celebrations.

“This is a very welcome development to honor sportsmen who have raised the flag of Luanshya town. FAZ will be at your disposal to support you in this regard. As FAZ we suggest that a match be held as part of the celebrations. We can discuss the details of the match befitting this occasion,” Kamanga told FAZ Media.

“Congratulations on providing leadership in honoring our football legends, and it remains my sincere belief that other cities and towns will emulate your initiative.”

The late Makwaza captained Zambia to their first AFCON appearance in 1974 while Collins Mbesuma was part of the 2012 Golden generation that won Chipolopolo’s first AFCON title.

  1. This honor which Luanshy is intending to do is very very good. Mbesuma like his other team mates that contributed to put Zambia back on the world soccer map should be recognised!

  2. While it is a good idea to honor sports Personalities by Lunacial Council, I feel the Council should have been more inclusive to look beyond football and try to spread the net wider, Many people have contributed in one way or another to the Luanshya we see today, for instance, people like Pwele who tirelessly worked towards the emancipation of Luanshya mine from the Binani group of Companies should have made the list.
