Irate residents of Kawama East in Mufulira District on the Copperbelt Province last night ran amok and set ablaze a Police Post after word went round that Police were holding a person who was in possession of human remains.
Copperbelt Province Police Commissioner Charity Katanga who confirmed the development to Zambian Watch says a vehicle has also been burnt to ashes whilst two others have been damaged.
Mrs. Katanga explains that seven persons that were in custody at the police post were also set free by the irate residents.
She says Police have since arrested four suspects in connection with the riot.
Past cases where irate residents have taken the Law into their own hands in Zambia.
On October 15, 2017 Mufumbwe residents burnt down Mufumbwe Police Station following an attempt by Police to stop what is locally called”chikondo”, a traditional belief meaning “a movng coffin” from taking place following the death of Matha Mingochi of Kakilufya area of Mufumbwe District, a Grade 11 pupil at a local secondary school.
And on 8th March 2016 residents of Lusaka’s George Compound set ablaze a police post in protest after four bodies were discovered in the area with private parts and ears chopped off.
