MMD on the Copperbelt has advised the police to ignore the Felix Mutati faction’s request to hold a card renewal exercise in the province.
In a statement, the Nevers Mumba MMD deputy spokesperson Peter Phiri stated that if Copperbelt Police Commissioner Charity Katanga gave Mutati permission to launch his renewal card, it would amount to contempt of court.
“The police should just ignore Mutati and his group because the Supreme Court sitting in Kabwe last year recognised Mumba as MMD president,” he stated. “Hence what Mutati is doing amounts to contempt of court and should the police command give him permission to go ahead with his planned activity in the province they may in the near future be cited for contempt.”
Phiri stated that it was common knowledge that the the national secretary Winnie Zaloumis had taken Mutati and three others to court asking who gave them the mandate to organise a convention in 2016.
He stated that Mutati had continued to hold illegal activities in his desperation to be party president.
Phiri stated that the activities being done were full of selfish motives.
He stated that the card renewals had no blessings from the party’s national executive committee.
Phiri maintained that Mutati had no position in the MMD.
“Mutati in his desperation has continued organising illegal activities in the name of the MMD. These activities which are being deemed as the party card renewals have no blessings from the party’s NEC but are aimed at bringing the name of the party into disrepute,” said Phiri. “From the information we have is that these activities are being done selfishly.”
