Ministry of General Education Permanent Secretary, Jobbics Kalumba has instructed the Provincial Education Office in Eastern Province to operationalise Edgar Lungu Technical School in Petauke District in the third term of 2019.
ZANIS reports that Dr Kalumba, who toured the school in Petauke yesterday said the facility, which was officially opened by President Edgar Lungu in March this year and handed over to the Ministry of General Education has not been operational because of some minor issues but pupils must start learning from the school in term three of 2019.
Dr Kalumba said the Provincial Education Office must work together with the Petauke District Education Office and immediately send modern teachers to the school and enrol pupils from Grade Eight.
Dr Kalumba said he was impressed with the modern infrastructure at Edgar Lungu Technical School, which is fully furnished and has well equipped departments, laboratories and has electricity and enough teachers houses, adding that the facility was ready to be used.
And Petauke (DEBS) District Education Board Secretary, Mumba Nkholoma said the school has a capacity of accommodating about 420 pupils.
Meanwhile, Dr Kalumba said there is need to change the Zambia School curriculum to make it relevant to pupils to concentrate on subjects that will build their career pathway.
Speaking when he addressed teachers at Petauke Boarding Secondary School on Sunday afternoon , Dr Kalumba said the current Zambian education curriculum is bulky as pupils learn a lot of subjects, of which some adds little value to their future career.
He said Government has reduced School fees so that every child must access education and urged teachers to identify the strength of pupils during their school time and encourage them in order to make them concentrate on subjects which will be beneficial to their career.
And Dr Kalumba urged teachers to carry out their work with a passion because teaching is a calling and must have an impact in the life of every pupil they teach.
He added that Government is working hard to address some of the challenges being faced by teachers such as Upgrading, Establishment and recruitments.
