Ronald Chitotela’s acquittal is a sham and a slap in the face of Justice.
As NDC we had previously stated that the ACC was ineffective and under the control of corrupt elements.
You see, the ACC charges Chitotela with concealing property suspected to be proceeds of crime. This charge did not make sense because they had not charged him with the actual crime of corruption and receiving bribes.
The ACC never charged Chitotela for the $300,000 he received from China Harbour.
The ACC never charged the Chinese nationals who bribed Chitotela.
The ACC and DEC never charged the lawyers who laundered this money on Chitotela’s behalf.
The ACC never pursued the most serious charges that could be leveled against this corrupt minister.
One does not need to be a lawyer to know that this case was set up to fail, how can you charge someone with concealing property suspected to be proceeds of crime when you ignore and have not yet proven the actual crime before a court of law.
It’s like building a house starting with the roof and ending with the foundation, it can’t be done!
The charge of concealing property suspected to be proceeds of crime should have been the last charge to slap him with after convicting him of receiving bribes. That would be in the process of recovery of stolen money.
It was very clear from the onset that Chitotela was being protected by a powerful puppet master behind the scenes. He kept his ministerial job throughout, his accomplices were not charged.
The only logical conclusion we can draw is that someone very big was also involved in the corrupt activities of Ronald Chitotela and that’s why the ACC could not fully pursue his case.
Why did they not pursue whoever received the $140,000?
This was a straightforward case, the bank statements are there to show that he did receive these bribes, they left an electronic footprint.
We can expect what has happened in Chitotela’s case to happen to Eric Chimese. Chimese will also be acquitted in the same manner because the ACC has not charged him with the actual crime of corruption. They’ve only charged him with concealing property suspected to be proceeds of crime without actually having established or proven the crime itself before a court of law.
Mr Chitotela should not think he is a free man, the time will come when he will face the real charges once the forces protecting him are out of government.
