The opposition UPND has welcomed the appointment of Patrick Nshindano as the new Chief Elections Officer at the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ).
Party Secretary General, Stephen Katuka says the UPND is optimistic that Mr. Nshindano’s character and experience as an advocate of good governance will turn around the fortunes of the ECZ in regaining public confidence.
Mr. Katuka has advised Mr. Nshindano to take a holistic approach to matters of elections in the country and regain public confidence in an organization that remains the pinnacle of Zambia’s democracy and its values.
He says Mr. Nshindamo’s appointment comes at the time when the organization needs to retain its credibility which has eroded in the recent past in the eyes of political players and the general public.
Meanwhile, Operation Young Vote- OYV- says the appointment of Mr. Nshindano, is not only a great milestone and right move to bring proper, sober and qualified experts in the institution but also timely as the ECZ puts its house in order to restore the general public’s lost confidence in the Commission since the 2016 disputed presidential and general elections.
OYV Executive Director, Guess Nyirenda has since implored all stakeholders that include the ECZ itself, political parties, Civil Society Organizations and the general public to assist Mr. Nshindano and the ECZ to succeed especially as the country heads for the presidential and general on 12 August, 2021.
