National team coach Sven Vandenbroeck says playmaker Enock Mwepu started on the bench during Saturday’s 2019 Cameroon Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Namibia because he joined camp on Tuesday.
Vandenbroeck said in a post-match interview in Windhoek that Mwepu trained with his teammates for only two days, hence not making the starting 11.
The Belgian started with two defensive midfielders – Nathan Sinkala and Salulani Phiri – leaving the Chipolopolo without a playmaker.
Zambia struggled to stamp authority on the match with Africa Cup winner Rainford Kalaba being anonymous although he had flashes of brilliance.
Winger Lubambo Musonda and striker Justine Shonga were the other two second half substitutes who brought life in the game. Lubambo almost scored upon coming in with a long range effort which was tipped over the bar by the Namibia goal. Shonga found the equalising goal late in the game.
