Minister of Information and Broadcasting Services, Kampamba Mulenga, has told BBC’s Focus on Africa that the discontinuation of Hakainde Hichilema’s case showed how liberal Zambian courts were.

“Only the courts of law can determine what the matter was and the arresting officers were not government – it is the law enforcers and this country is governed by rules. The law of the land has to prevail and that’s why people, after being arrested, are subsequently taken to the courts of law. So, it is not for anybody or a certain sector of society to determine what the matter was all about – that is why we have a judicial system to determine a matter,” said Mulenga. “Definitely, we welcome the decision by the DPP to enter a nolle and of course, as government we are very glad [because] this just shows how liberal our courts are. The accusations made earlier by some sectors of society that the executive has interference in the judiciary and we are very glad and this country has to move on…we have a competent judicial system and this is the way it should be; it’s in line with our democracy.”

Pope John Paul II said, “Stupidity is also a gift of God, but one mustn’t misuse it.” And stupidity is behaviour that shows a lack of good sense or judgement, lack of intelligence, unintelligence, foolishness, denseness, brainlessness, ignorance, mindlessness, dull-wittedness, dull-headedness, dullness, slow-wittedness, doltishness, slowness.

We doubt Kampamba can understand the magnitude of the stupidity in her statement. How else can one explain Kampamba’s statement? Anyway, sometimes a politician wants to be stupid if it lets her or him do a thing her or his cleverness forbids.

It may, sometimes, not be right to attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.

Napoléon Bonaparte said  in politics, stupidity is not a handicap. But he also believed that the only victories which leave no regret are those which are gained over ignorance.

Martin Luther King, Jr said,

Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.

The Patriotic Front and its government must accept to face reality as it is, not as they wish it to be over, the incarceration of Hakainde on trumped up treason charges. There was no treason there. One doesn’t need to be a lawyer or a judge to realise there was no prosecutable treason charges there. The charges of treason the Director of Public Prosecutions took to court were not only stupid but malicious and could not be prosecuted. And since the process of bringing those charges before court were correct, there was little, if not nothing, the court could do but to entertain them and only dismiss them at the case or no case to answer stage.

Kampamba may not know what she is talking about, but the Director of Public Prosecutions knew what she was doing and why she was doing it. The whole purpose of that treason case was to simply keep  Hakainde in prison for four months or more. The whole scheme was malicious from the very beginning. But the Director of Public Prosecutions has no discernible  personal issues with Hakainde to fix or punish him in that way. It’s very clear that the Director of Public Prosecutions was acting on political orders to try and prosecute such a clearly stupid treason case. This was a matter initiated and ended by the political authorities controlling the Director of Public Prosecutions.

So what is Kampamba talking about? She probably has just about enough intelligence to open her mouth when she wants to eat, but certainly no more. Looking at this issue and the way they are trying to twist things carefully, it easy to come to the conclusion that stupidity is the same as evil if you judge by the results. Stubborn and ardent clinging to a clearly faulty argument or opinion is the best proof of stupidity. It really doesn’t make sense for this government to try and turn its weaknesses, mess – the stupid treason charges against Hakainde – into a virtue.

One should never be ashamed to own up that he or she has been in the wrong, which is but saying in other words that he or she is wiser today than he or she was yesterday.

  1. When the late Nalumino Mundia was Prime Minister during supper KKs rein, NM encouraged MPs and those in the government to be abreast with dynamics in governance by reading. This entails those appointed to run ministries to aquatint themselves with core functions of government and their ministries in particular. I suppose this is happening but we are seeing lots of blunders. The team skipper ought to act to improve the situation of the blunders

  2. Baroness Scotland was once Attorney General for the U.K. and she negotiated the dropping of HH’s frivolous treason charges with Lungu who in turn ordered the DPP to enter a nolle! It’s tragic that this PF mouth piece can’t connect the dots. True, she only opens her mouth to eat and give Blo.w Jobs, for every other time it’s all garbage oozing out!
