Walter Scott said, “Oh, what a tangled web we weave…when first we practice to deceive.” Indeed today, State House is entangled in a web of lies over Hakainde Hichilema’s arrest, detention and treason charge.
Appearing on Aljazeera’s ‘The Stream’ live television programme last Tuesday, Amos Chanda, the State House press aide, said whenever the life of the President was in danger, the act could be classified as treason.
But in April, soon after the Limulunga road rage, the same Amos said the motorcade incident did not put President Edgar Lungu at risk.
In response to several queries on a WhatsApp media group about the incident, Amos said Edgar’s entourage did not want to fall into Hakainde’s ‘trap’ of causing a scene by forcing him off the road.
“Route lining was done. HH passed major checkpoints in good time but slowed down so Eagle One can find him on the way, which happened. We had two options: to slow down and allow [him] to reach Limulunga or to bump him off and create some scene of sorts which is what he wanted. A decision was made to bypass him and in our mind we were clear no danger was posed to HE unless HH himself would ram his car into Eagle One,” stated Amos then.
“A split second decision would be made to prevent that cause at that stage any movable object in motion or stationery is constantly on target from some close range, which is why it was spectacularly foolish for HH and his minders to place themselves into that real and eminent danger! Secondly, as per established security and protocol orders, a decision to bump off all strange objects was made but a quick consultation upwards resulted into a different option which was undertaken…”
However, during Aljazeera’s ‘The Stream’ live programme on governance in Zambia, Amos confirmed that the incident is what landed the UPND leader in prison.
Asked by the presenter how a road-rage incident turned into a treason case, Amos said, “I do not know why the police charged him with treason. But I can speculate that whenever the life of the President is in danger, you are within the realm of treason. I don’t know whether it is treason myself because the judge is about to pronounce on that case but whenever you endanger the life of a President, which is why those around president Hichilema and whoever advised him to behave in that way are spectacularly foolish.”
Lies are very difficult to sustain, nourish. If you don’t want to slip up tomorrow, speak the truth today. Lies have expiry dates, they have a short shelf life, but the truth never expires. Lies go bad. Lies rot and stink up the joint.
So many lies have been told over Hakainde’s arrest, detention and treason charge. Police officers told lies about Hakainde in and outside court. They got caught in their web of lies and had to apologise in court. They actually made themselves look so stupid. If you tell the truth, you don’t have to remember anything.
We haven’t yet seen the end of their lies. There’s still more to come. You never see the entire script of political theater until long after the last scene has been acted out. The truth cannot be woven out of a string of lies; you cannot weave the truth from a string of lies. Even the best bluffers must eventually lay their cards on the table. Dishonesty, lack of integrity catches up with you. No lie can live forever. The practice of deception is foolishness because the truth always eventually surfaces.
Lying is very easy. But keeping a lie isn’t an easy undertaking; it’s a lonely one. There’s no human being with a good enough memory to be a successful liar. He who tells a lie is not sensible how great a task he undertakes; for he must be forced to invent many more lies to maintain the first one. If you tell the truth, you don’t have to tell lies endlessly.
These liars will soon realise that things come apart so easily when they have been held together with lies. And time will inevitably uncover dishonesty and lies; history has no place for them.
Indeed, truth is treason in the empire of lies. And it seems in this government, lying is the norm. They all lie, from the top man down to the bottom. If their lips are moving, a lie is unfolding. This is really political leadership by lies. But leadership by deception isn’t leadership; it’s fraud.
And we have seen that those who are capable of tyranny are capable of lying, perjury to sustain it. We should never take the view that we should say whatever we need to say in order to achieve something because that implies a level of dishonesty. One who pursues moral ends with unmoral means is involved in a contradiction of motives, and nullifies the object at which one aims, since one denies it by one’s actions. Glory built on selfish principles is shame and guilt.
The best thing is to never do anything you are ashamed of and you’ll never have to lie. And it is said that the more things one is ashamed of, the more respectable one is.
If something has truthful basis, there is no shame in turning back when you discover you are on the wrong path. There’s no need to fear the truth. As Plato wrote, “We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light.” To be without guile is to be free of deceit, cunning, hypocrisy, and dishonesty in thought or action. Honesty is of God and dishonesty of the devil; the devil was a liar from the beginning. And one of Satan’s most deceptive and powerful ways of defeating us is to get us to believe a lie. And the biggest lie is that there are no consequences to our own doing. Satan will give you whatever you ask for if it will lead you where he ultimately wants you.
Truth leads to good deeds, and good deeds lead to Paradise. Falsehood leads to evil deeds, and evil deeds lead to the fire. This is probably why everybody hates lies, even the liars themselves.
The truth is best even when we find it unpleasant. Any rat in a sewer can lie. It’s how rats are. It’s what makes them rats. But a human being doesn’t run and hide in dark places, because he’s something more. Lying is the most personal act of cowardice there is. And dishonesty of any kind will create a blemish.
Those who are hiring liars to lie for them should be very careful. He who lies for you will lie against you. The lies being told about Hakainde will boomerang. Never try to destroy someone else’s life with a lie when yours can be destroyed with the truth.
For every good reason there is to lie, there is a better reason to tell the truth.
Lies don’t fix things. They don’t even make things easier, at least not in the long run. The best is to tell the truth and then clean up an honest mess.
Lying is actually an admission of weakness. If you’re the strongest, you can afford to tell the truth.
