Felix Mutati was not appointed Minister of Finance as a member of the Patriotic Front but as a leader of the MMD. It therefore doesn’t make sense today for anyone to expect Mutati to be Patriotic Front and not MMD.
Mutati’s loyalty is to the government of the Republic of Zambia and not to the Patriotic Front. Mutati is not a member of the Patriotic Front and as such does not sit on its central committee or any of its leadership committees.
Mutati is in Parliament as a nominated member and not as a Patriotic Front representative. When nominating Mutati to Parliament and appointing him as Minister of Finance, Edgar knew all this very well or ought to have known all this very well.
Of course, nothing stops Mutati from resigning from the MMD and joining the Patriotic Front. But that is his choice and was not part of the deal for him to join Edgar’s government. This being the case, why are we today witnessing these poorly organised and embarrassing protests by the Patriotic Front against Mutati?
Patriotic Front secretary general Davies Mwila says MMD members who are serving in Edgar’s government must choose which political party they will solely serve.
Speaking when Eastern Province Patriotic Front provincial vice-chairman Edwin Phiri delivered to him a petition demanding the immediate dismissal of Mutati as finance minister on grounds that he was not loyal to the ruling party, Mwila said Mutati and other opposition political party members serving in the Patriotic Front government must choose between the Patriotic Front and MMD.
Why should Mutati today be made to choose between the Patriotic Front and MMD? What wrong has Mutati done? Doesn’t Mutati, as an opposition leader, have the right to contest the 2021 elections on the MMD ticket against the Patriotic Front candidate? And why is Edgar silent about these calls for Mutati to leave the Patriotic Front government?
We have seen such schemes before. Michael Sata behaved the same way over the demonstrations against Wynter Kabimba. He pretended not to be part of the protests against Wynter when he was part of their sponsors and organisers. We have every reason to believe Edgar is part of the sponsors and organisers of the Patriotic Front protests against Mutati. But as Benjamin Franklin correctly observed, “Trickery and treachery are the practices of fools that have not the wits enough to be honest.”
Like Chishimba Kambwili and others, Mutati was used to help Edgar win last year’s elections. His usefulness is now over. But it would seem Edgar doesn’t know how to discard him.
What Edgar needs to learn is how to love people and use power instead of using people and loving power. People have feelings, they are not there to be used. If you’re no longer interested in someone, they have the right to be informed before you go and mobilise your ignorant and poor party cadres against them. It’s frightening how Edgar discards and forgets people when he doesn’t need any more favours from them. Look at how Emmanuel Chilubanama was so easily done away with over just some ‘small’ transgression after all that he had risked to get him ‘win’ last year’s elections and amass so much wealth in a very short time! Today, Chilubanama is desperately, shamelessly and foolishly trying to find his way back to Edgar and be appointed to something.
We have learned that people use others’ bodies to climb to the top and then find ways to discard them. But in order to escape accountability for this, they do everything in their power to promote forgetfulness. If this fails, they mobilise cadres to attack their credibility by accusing them of all sorts of stupid and false things.
Such demands cannot be answered by personal abuse; there is no logic in slander, and falsehood, in the long run, defeats itself.
Anytime you’re taking advantage of other people, we think some sort of punishment is definitely correct. We believe the root of all evil is the abuse of others.
As for Mutati, it’s time he realised that Edgar doesn’t want him anymore. And there’s no need for him to hang on to that job if his host – Edgar – no longer wants him. Those Patriotic Front cadres’ protests against him wouldn’t be there if Edgar wasn’t behind them or had not approved them. Does Mutati really need to wait for Edgar to fire and humiliate him?
