UPND’s Convention talk is just meant to hoodwink its members, former party presidential spokesperson Edwin Lifwekelo has said.

Mr Lifwekelo was commenting on a circular by UPND about holding a convention on an unspecified date issued to all members by spokesperson Charles Kakoma Recently Mr Kakoma told the Daily Nation that the National Committee had proposed to hold a convention and that all requirements were being put in place and the date would soon be announced.

Mr Lifwekelo told the Daily Nation yesterday that UPND members should forget about the convention because the party’s leader Mr Hakainde Hichilema had categorically indicated that he would never allow anyone anyone to challenge him.

He said when he joined UPND, Mr Hichilema and others warned him never to champion the convention as it was not a priority of the leadership.

“I can attest today that Mr Hichilema and Mr Katuka warned me never to join people who were calling for the convention,

“They categorically said I will be dealt with if I did that because the issue was not on their list,” he said.

Mr Lifwekelo said as long as Mr Hichilema had not made any announcement regarding the convention, the members should forget about it.

He said the entire leadership would soon gang up on members that were proposing for the convention, saying they would soon be dealt with.

Mr Lifwekelo said Mr Hichilema vowed to hand pick people who were loyal to him.

He said Mr Hichilema was aware of some party members who were not happy with his leadership hence would never call for a convention to allow people he perceived to be his enemies to challenge him.

“See there are people like Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba (GBM) and many more who want to challenge him at the convention, so he would not allow them at all,” Mr Lifwekelo said.
