A group of vendors has this morning disrupted other vendors from selling in Kitwe City Centre, asking them to clean up the area before any trading continues.
Chairman of the group, Mwansa Bwalya had said that Kitwe is the dirtiest city in the Copperbelt and his group is geared to help the council to make the city clean again.
” We are here to make order and ensure cleanliness of the area. We want to remove the disorder so that vendors, shoppers and shop owners can all be happy”
The group had also cautioned vendors against use of vulgar language and drinking in public. Mwansa informed the vendors that there is a security team in place to deal with any misbehaviour of vendors.
Meanwhile, vendors have cooperated with this initiative and have said they are looking forward to seeing the new initiative bear fruit.
This development, an attempt at self regulation of vendors, is the latest twist on an issue that has over the years left the council authority out of breath with the scale of street vending in Kitwe.
