Zambian engineering student engineers K700,000 into his bank account
FLYING in for a holiday via the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (KKIA) from China where he is training to be an engineer, a 24-year-old Zambian male received a rather rough and unusual welcome in which several palms of angry people violently collided with different parts of his face.
As Kelvin Mbinji went through the arrival formalities in the recently-commissioned terminal 2 of the KKIA yesterday, he was being awaited by a sizable group claiming he had not fulfilled his promises to send them various Chinese items after depositing sums of money into his bank account.
Apparently, while in China Mbinji received more than K700,000 from different people who wanted him to buy them phones, laptops, hair extensions and clothes among other items believed to be cheaper in the Asian country, but the goods never arrived.
However, Mbinji’s business luck ended when some people who had ordered items as late as six days ago were shocked to track him enjoying some exotic whiskey on a flight back home when they had not received their items.
United in loss and anger, Mbinji’s victims mobilised and hatched a plan to apprehend him on arrival at the Airport.
Mbinji was in the KKIA car park about leave when he was positively identified and confronted before being grabbed by his “customers” who cut short his trip home.
Not one to go down without a fight, Mbinji tried to fight off his captors but he was no match – they responded with vicious slaps and screams that perforated his will to fight back.
Cornered and defeated, the international businessesman was then led to grace the unsanitary holding cells of Kabwata Police Station in Lusaka as guest speaker for a weekend business seminar with fellow cellmates.
One woman who was part of the group that apprehended Mbinji said she had sent him K19,000 for items he never delivered leading her to report the matter to Kabwata Police Station.
Several other people registered similar complaints against Mbinji with Lusaka and Kitwe Central Police.
Zambia Police Service are yet to issue a comment on the matter as Mbinji remains in custody.
